Do you ever feel like writing AI prompts should be easy, but the output still comes back bland or off target?
I used to think the same thing. I’d toss in a quick line and hope the AI would “get it.” It didn’t. Once I learned how to guide it, the quality jumped fast.
Why Writing Strong Prompts Feels Hard
Most marketers expect AI to read between the lines.
It doesn’t.
We skip details because we’re moving fast or unsure what to include. Then we wonder why the copy reads like a high school book report.
Here’s what usually gets in the way:
1. You assume AI knows your intent
It only sees the words you type.
If the prompt is unclear, the result will be too.
2. You leave out voice and tone
AI will pick whatever style feels “safe,” and that usually means dull.
3. You don’t explain the outcome you want
Without a clear goal, the AI fills space instead of driving results.
4. You don’t ask for structure
No structure leads to rambling paragraphs you wouldn’t use.
The Fix: Treat Prompt Writing Like Giving Simple Directions
If I were to suggest something to new marketers, I would break it down into five steps.
Step 1: Start With the Goal
Ask yourself, “What job do I want this to do?”
A lead warm-up email?
A hook for a product page?
A blog outline with a clear angle?
State the goal right inside the prompt.
Step 2: Add the Audience
Tell AI who you’re talking to.
Your reader’s age, skill level, or pain point helps guide the tone.
Step 3: Describe the Style
Short and punchy?
Warm and friendly?
Simple and clear?
If you don’t choose the voice, the AI will choose for you.
Step 4: Give the Key Points
List the ideas, benefits, or features you want included.
This stops the AI from drifting into vague filler.
Step 5: Ask for a Format
Want bullets?
Want subheads?
Want a hook first?
Say it.
Why These Steps Work
When you guide AI with a complete prompt, you avoid:
- confusing results
- generic text
- missed angles
- tone that feels off
- long edits
And you get:
- stronger output
- faster writing
- more control over voice
- consistent branding
- less overwhelm
Writing AI prompts isn’t a creative mystery.
It’s a skill. Once you learn it, your content becomes sharper, faster, and far more useful.
